What is the Town of Clifton Park Open Space Program?
The Town of Clifton Park, has an active Open Space Program that
has preserved over 850 acres and completed 13 miles of trails to
date and has recently won three notable awards for its open space
planning and implementation efforts.
- New York State Association of Realtors, Smart Growth
Excellence Award
- New York State Upstate American Planning Association, for
Implementation of Western Clifton Park Land Conservation Plan and
GEIS
- Saratoga PLAN, Award for Blue Karner Butterfly Stewardship
Clifton Park is unique in having a local, municipal open space
program, as landowners in most other communities in New York State
must rely upon county or state government open space programs, if
applicable, or alternatively, find an interested private land trust.
The Open Space Program is an activity and service provided by
Clifton Park’s local government to work toward the goals and
initiatives identified in the publicly-developed and supported Town
of Clifton Park Open Space Plan 2003. The program offers a structure
and process for conserving additional open space, natural areas and
lands for drinking water protection; securing permanent conservation
easements for protection of working farms and farmland; acquiring
additional land for trails and active parks; establishing enhanced
public access to and facilities for riverfront lands; and protecting
historic landscapes and unique places.
The Open Space Coordinator, based in the Town’s Planning Department,
works closely with an appointed Open Space, Trails and Riverfront
Committee, Director of Planning and other town staff to identify and
develop conservation projects throughout town, and to continue to
support ongoing initiatives. Landowners interested in conservation
now have additional local tools and options than ever before if they
would like to explore how some level of conservation of their
property may help them with their individual goals.
Please contact the Open Space Coordinator at (518) 371-6054 with any
questions.
