John Scherer has been Town Historian for the Town
of Clifton Park, Saratoga County since 1978. He was instrumental in
setting up a Historic Preservation Commission for the Town and
served as its first chairman. He has published three books on
Clifton Park history, writes a monthly article on local history for
The Community News, a Southern Saratoga County newspaper, and
lectures extensively on Clifton Park history. Scherer has also had
several articles published in The New England Historical and
Genealogical Register. He currently serves on several Town
committees, and is active on the Grooms Tavern Renovations Project.
Currently employed at the New York State Museum as Curator of
American decorative arts; popular entertainment; musical instruments
and is a Senior Historian in State Service.
The Town Historian position was volunteer, but John's experstise has earned him a quarterly stipend to assist and support his efforts.
John provides what information his schedule and time allows. Clifton Park is lucky to
have such knowledge and expertise readily available to the
community.
Town Historian hours at Town Hall:
First and third Tuesdays of the month from 7 PM to 9 PM.
