Dwaas Kill Nature Preserve
Located between Pierce & Kinns Roads, this 250-acre nature preserve
will provide public access for passive recreation, nature observation and learning
opportunities.
The Dwaas Kill Nature Preserve contains a diverse group of plant
and animal life and is one of the largest intact natural areas in town.
The town plans to develop passive recreation opportunities at the site that would respect
the existing habitat, such as a network of trails or observation areas for educational uses.
Internal trails at the preserve could be connected to a recently built trail off of nearby
Kinns Road.
During the conceptual design process, town officials worked with the Dwaas Kill Nature Preserve
Committee and members of the public to develop a trails system that respects and protects unique
ecological features of the land. For example, a trail or viewing area may be built around a
sensitive habitat or wetlands meadow so the public can enjoy nature while also protecting it.
Educational opportunities for adults and children will also be available at the preserve, and the
town has worked with a number of current and retired educators to develop features in the plan that
will be beneficial to teachers and students.
