The Town of Clifton Park is conducting its first-ever Bio-Blitz, a science and nature
discovery day, to be held at Veterans Memorial Park on Sunday, April 26, 2009, from 6 a.m.
to 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to the free event to explore the biological diversity of
this natural area.
“This event is part science observation, part education opportunity and part festival
to celebrate the unique area in and around Veterans Park,” said Councilman Scott Hughes,
the liaison to the town’s Open Space, Trails and Riverfront Committee. “The Bio Blitz
will help raise awareness about the diverse types of species and habitats in one of
Clifton Park’s natural areas, and I look forward to holding similar events at other areas
throughout town in the future.”
Guided nature walks will be held at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and will be led by
science teachers and environmental educators. Visitors should meet up at the park pavilion,
which will be the “base camp” for the day for identifying and tallying species, observing
scientists in action, and for environmental educational displays. A final species count and
celebration will be held at 5 p.m.
Residents who want to help identify the variety of plants and animals are invited to sign up
and participate on a nature survey team led by naturalist experts. The nature survey teams
will each be in the field for approximately 3-hour sessions starting at 6 a.m. and running
throughout the day.
Veterans Memorial Park is 138 acres of town-owned parkland that includes softball fields,
a picnic pavilion and informal walking paths. The site includes a diversity of habitats,
including two streams, open wetlands, wooded wetlands, woodlands and former agricultural
fields that are becoming inhabited with shrubs and trees.
The guided nature walks will take place on mostly flat terrain, but there is no pavement,
and some muddy or wet areas may be encountered during the walks. Visitors should come
dressed appropriately for the outdoors, with clothes such as hiking boots or sturdy walking
shoes, long sleeves and long pants, as well as hats and sunscreen. No pets are permitted at
this event.
