WELLNESS WEDNESDAY: HEART HEALTH—MEN VS. WOMEN - Wednesday, May 7, 1p.m.
Did you know that the risk factors and symptoms of a heart attack are different for men versus
women? Exercise Physiologist, Michael Jantzen, of St. Peter’s Hospital will help explain how
gender plays an important role in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of heart disease

SPEAKER SERIES: SAFETY FOR THE HOME & TOUR OF FIRE PREVENTION BUS -
Wednesday, May 14, 1-2:30 p.m.
This program, presented last October, was such a hit that those who attended recommended
we offer it again this spring. Town Safety Officer and Jonesville Fire Chief, Lou Pasquarell,
and Security Officer, John Espizito, will offer some great tips and standards for keeping
your home safe for you and your loved ones while you are at home or on vacation. Learn
useful information such as electrical safety, home and travel emergency kit contents,
keeping fire extinguishers and smoke detectors up-to-date and more. Fire Marshall, Cheryl
Reed, will lead the second half of this program in a tour of a recently renovated
school bus transformed into a mock home, and used as a clever fire safety awareness

Take advantage of the green season with Registered Dietician and Hannaford Nutrition
Coordinator, Marianne Romano, in this intriguing presentation on the many uses of popular
herbs as well as their health benefits. Watch a demonstration on how you can make a
windowsill herb garden for your own home and receive great recipes and FREE herb giveaways!

MACULAR DEGENERATION SEMI-ANNUAL SPEAKER - Thursday, June 12, at 1 p.m.
The Macular Degeneration Support Group welcomes Maureen Strainge, Co-director of Rehabilitation
Services, and Outreach Coordinator, Cheryl Palma, of the Northeastern Association for the
Blind at Albany (NABA) to talk about the leading causes of visual impairment and NABA’s
rehabilitation services for people who are legally blind in the Capital Region. Find out
how people of all ages can adapt to their vision loss, maximize their remaining vision,
achieve their goals, and be more productive and independent. Everyone welcome! Please sign

MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL LUNCHEON & ENTERTAINMENT - Friday, May 9 at noon
Everyone is welcome to join in this special event in dedication to mothers everywhere.
Sign up for Prestige Services lunch meal by noon, May 8 in order to enjoy a special Mother’s
Day menu. Hot meals for guests under 60 are just $3.00/person and the suggested donation
for individuals over 60 is $2.00 due on the day of the event. If you have not yet filled

Join Senior Citizens across the county for a hot delicious meal at the beautiful
Saratoga Springs City Center for a suggested donation of just $4.00 per person. See
Debbie in the Senior Center’s kitchen before 1 p.m. to purchase a ticket or a Front
Desk Receptionist between 1-4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Ticket deadline is Friday,

BASKET OF HOPE PROGRAM
We are proud to announce that The Shenendehowa Senior Citizens Center will serve as a
Baskets of Hope Collection Center, collecting items for local victims of domestic violence.
One in 4 women is a victim of domestic violence and we need your help to provide these
women and children with basic personal care items. Please join The Chamber of Southern
Saratoga County’s Women in Business Committee in helping to support these victims. Your
donation of personal care items, domestic/household items and school supplies will be used
for inclusion in volunteered assembled gifts for the Saratoga County Safe House. Items
needed for women and children include but are not limited to: skin and body care products,
hair care, make-up, razors, toothpaste, deodorant, pens, pencils, crayons, backpacks,
notebooks, rulers, etc…There will be a box set up in the Center for collections. Thank
you so much for making a difference!
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
The Center welcomes the public of all ages to our popular monthly dances. On Saturday,
May 10, from 8-11p.m, The Big Band Sound, led by Greg Nazarian, will play songs from
the Big Band Era, as well as other popular tunes from the 50’s. Join us and become a new
fan! $8 Per person charge at the door. Then, on Sunday, May 18 (Note 3rd Sunday this month),
from 7-10 p.m., DJ, Brian Zapel will set the mood for a social evening with classics that
will have you dancing ballroom, swing, rumba, cha-cha, tango, and more to beloved songs of

The third Wednesday of each month is your chance to suggest, applaud, critique,
and learn about what’s happening at your Center during our monthly business meeting.
This month we welcome Mary Broderick of the Foster Grandparents Program to speak on
the opportunity for seniors over 60 years of age, income eligible, and with a love for
children to volunteer an average of 20 hours a week to sharing your life experiences
and a special friendship with young children while earning a tax-free hourly stipend
at nearby sites such as schools, Head Start Programs, after-school programs, day care
centers, hospitals and other sites where children need you! The Volunteer Recognition
Reception will follow with refreshments to recognize and honor all of our invaluable
Center volunteers.

SPRING CONCERT & ICE CREAM SOCIAL - Thursday, May 24, 1:00 p.m.
The Shen Sr. Chorus, led by Interim Choral Director, Vern Hellijas, will present a
wide variety of familiar songs including Vern’s special arrangements of “What a
Wonderful World” and “La Vie En.” We will also have guest flautist, Renee Janack
accompany a couple pieces. The program will conclude with our traditional “Stan’s
Sing-Along,” led by favorite accompanist Stanley Muraski. Everyone is invited to
bring in the spring season with lively songs and an ice cream social to follow.
Ice cream and toppings are free courtesy of Stewarts Shops. Admission to the concert
is also free and we hope you will support our talented volunteer chorus. Please
bring a non-perishable item to support the Jonesville Food Pantry. Open to the public.
END OF THE YEAR ORCHESTRA AND BIG SWING BAND CONCERTS -
Who could ask for a better way to kick off the summer than with the extraordinary
music of the Orchestra on the Common and The Big Swing Band? These talented musicians
volunteer their time from September through June to prepare two seasonal concerts
of highly professional quality. You get free entertainment, refreshments, and a trip
down memory lane with all time favorite pieces, so plan to attend and support The
Big Swing Band on Monday, June 9 and The Orchestra on the Common on Friday, June 13.
Both concerts begin at 1 p.m.
LOBSTERFEAST TRIP: June 10, 10 a.m-5 p.m.
Join us again at the beautiful Lob Cabin in Holyoke, MA for a feast fit
for royalty. "Big John" Hartman, preceded by his excellent reputation, will
entertain us with his repertoire of musical styles including big band, country,

CALLING ALL GARDENERS!
Yes, it’s time to be thinking gardens again here at the Center, and our loyal band
of garden helpers are seeking new recruits to help out, as your schedule permits,
this late spring and summer in planting, trimming, and “deadheading” the Center’s
flower beds. Several of our beds are thigh high so you don’t even have to bend over.
Typically we meet Tuesday mornings, but we have flexibility for frequency and days of
anyone willing to help! If you are interested in joining our “green” team, please
contact Laura at 383-1343 and plan to attend an organizational meeting Tuesday, May
13 at 9:30 a.m.

The Center offers the Early Bird Special (EBS) unless otherwise noted.
Deduct $5 from the listed class fee if you register and pay at least five weekdays
prior to the first class. Please feel free to come and observe any class. See instructor
for space availability once classes have begun. Students who miss class(es) will only
be refunded under special circumstances and at the discretion of the Program Director,
Instructor, and/or Executive Director. Every effort will be made to reschedule, credit,
or refund participants for any class(es) cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances such
as weather or instructor illness. Members always get first priority for class programming.

Chair Yoga: Yoga is a lifestyle approach that concentrates on a person’s body, mind,

Massage Therapy: Licensed Massage Therapist, Roberta Chamberlin, will be at the

MVP Gold Moves: Stay mobile and strong! Led by MVP Community Health Educator,
Kristine Lindahl, this 12 week low impact aerobic workout incorporates varied step sequences
and upper body movements that challenge and improve your coordination, balance, and memory.
Following the aerobics portion of class, free weights and rubber tubing are used for upper
body strengthening concluding with stretching that focuses on breathing. Tuesdays, 1-2 p.m.

Widows' Support Group: Facilitated support group sorts through the many issues and
emotions involved in the coping process of losing a spouse. Welcoming new facilitator, Meaghan

Computer Instruction: You may make an appointment via the front desk with any of
our following instructors: Vern Symes (Tuesdays 10-12, except 3rd Tuesday of the month,
Tuesdays 1-2pm, Thursdays 10-11 a.m. except 2nd Thursday of the month), Billie Lindstead
and Carl Risch (As needed).
Independent Financial Consultant: Robert Clute, 35 years experience as a Financial
Advisor for Merril Lynch. By appointment, 1st Thursday of the month, (May-January)
Attorney at Law Consultant: Rosemary T. Hoag offers 20 minute consultations by
appointment through the front desk, 1st Tuesday of the month, except July and September.
Blood Pressure Clinic: 2nd Wednesday of month, except months with Health Screenings
(March & August) 1:30-2:30pm. Blood Pressures are taken and recorded in confidence by volunteer nurses.
