The Stray Dog
Author: Marc Simont
From a true story by Reiko Sassa
Harper Collins
Ages 5 - 8
This story is simple: One Saturday,
while on a picnic, two children play with a stray dog. They don’t take him home,
(their parents say he might belong to someone else), but the entire family
thinks about him all week and they return to the same picnic spot the next
Saturday. The children save Willy, (they have already named him), from a
determined dogcatcher and adopt him. A plot that satisfies – straightforward and
clean. The text is spare –watercolor illustration, captivating.
Caldecott Honor author, Marc Simont captures an unadorned, real-life experience
and turns it into a child’s dream come true!
