Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus (Caldecott Honor Book)
Author/Illustrator: Mo Willems
Hyperion
Ages 2 – 6
This interactive tale is both funny and a joy to read. It will appeal to any
preschooler or lower elementary school child with a sense of humor. It’s the
story of a determined pigeon with the temper and will of a preschooler. The
first page has the bus driver directly addressing the reader, asking if they
will watch things while he leaves for a little while, and emphasizes that they
“Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus.” The driver walks off one page, the pigeon
walks on the next, of course asking to drive.
He begs, tries to make deals, bargains, and finally insists that he be allowed
to drive the bus. The reader will still refuse. Kids love saying no to Pigeon,
and this opportunity to is bound to be flattering and fun. Pictures in this book
are cartoon style and most pages have a single image and a bubble of text; the
strength of the story; its simplicity, and laugh out loud entertainment.
