Diary of a Worm
Author: Doreen Cronin
Illustrator: Harry Bliss
HarperCollins Press
Ages 6 – 9
Our hero, an unnamed worm, who wears a red baseball cap records his daily
activities, which are definitely interesting. Worm brings home his report card
with an A in tunneling, passes compost and squirming, but with the note, “needs
to resist eating homework.” The family – Worm, mother, father, grandfather and
sister will give readers some great belly laughs, as Worm records their daily
activities and anecdotes. (“His mom tells him there are three things to
remember. First, the earth gives us everything we need. Second, he’s the earth’s
caretaker as tunnel digger extraordinaire. And finally, “Never bother Daddy when
he’s eating the newspaper.”) Worm laments about some things in his life, (“I
can’t chew gum”), but finds much to like, too. (“I never have to take a bath.”)
Entry by entry, life as a worm is revealed, in this uniquely illustrated, laugh
out loud, worm’s eye view of the world.
