What is Dollars for Scholars?

Shenendehowa Dollars for Scholars is the local chapter of a national, not-for-profit volunteer organization that develops funds and awards scholarships to deserving students. Our goal is to help students who live in the Shenendehowa District meet the high costs of post-secondary education. Dollars for Scholars chapters work with hundreds of colleges and schools to maximize the value of their scholarships and reduce students' reliance on loans.

Why is Dollars for Scholars important?

We provide both encouragement and financial support for local students. Hundreds of colleges have agreed as "Collegiate Partners" to accept these awards towards better meeting students' needs or reducing loans; many colleges have also agreed to match Dollars for Scholars awards.

How are scholarship funds raised? What is the organization's tax status?

Funds come from the generous support of local businesses, service organizations and individuals and fundraising activities. Because we are a charitable organization, donations are tax-deductible. All money raised for Dollars for Scholars goes to assist local students. If you wish to consider establishing a permanent endowed scholarship, contact one of the officers of our local chapter. Our organization may also be named as a beneficiary in wills and insurance policies and receive gifts of property. The funds are administered through the Community Foundation for the Capital Region. Through affiliation with Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America (now known as Scholarship America), the Shenendehowa chapter is a tax-exempt charitable organization under IRS ruling 501c3 and is a publicly supported charity under IRS ruling 170b1Avi. Contact us for ID numbers.

Who can apply for a Scholarship?

Any high school senior who is a permanent resident of the Shenendehowa School District may apply, regardless of the high school he or she attends. Scholarships can be used at any accredited post-secondary institution.

How are scholarships awarded?

The Awards Committee, made up of volunteers from the Dollars for Scholars board and other community leaders, selects deserving recipients on the basis of school and community service, academic achievement, one or two letters of recommendation,  a completed application and an essay.

When and how will awards be announced?

The scholarship deadline is March 10. Recipients will be notified by April 15th as to whether or not they have been selected to receive a scholarship. Recipients will be announced in local publications.
