SHENENDEHOWA DOLLARS FOR SCHOLARS SCHOLARSHIPS

APPLICATION for 2012

IMPORTANT:  All applications must be postmarked by MARCH 19, 2012.  SHENENDEHOWA HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS MUST RETURN COMPLETED APPLICATIONS TO THE COUNSELING CENTER BY FEBRUARY 20, 2012.

Eligibility:  Students must be permanent residents of the Shenendehowa School District, graduating seniors receiving an accredited high school degree, and applicants to accredited post-secondary institutions.

General criteria:   (1) Community and/or school service and/or employment, (2) academic achievement, (3) your personal essay and (4) two letters of reference - one from a teacher and another from someone who knows you well.  Some scholarships have additional requirements which you must meet.  "Special circumstances," as described by you on Page 2 of this application, may also be taken into consideration.  All personal identifying information will be withheld so that the selections will be made anonymously. 

All applicants will be considered for Shenendehowa Dollars for Scholars Scholarships.  Mark with an "X" all other scholarships for which you wish to apply.  (20 scholarships of $500 to $1,000 each were awarded in 2010.)

                                             SPECIAL NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS:

__ COMMUNITY NEWS SCHOLARSHIPS:   General criteria plus interest in journalism.  In addition to your personal essay, you must write a news article on a current local (within the Capital Region) event.  The article should be written in a journalistic style relying on facts rather than opinion, include a personal interview and should be 800 words or less.  Applicants are encouraged to read one or more issues of Community News to see examples of acceptable news stories, which could include a profile of a local business or business person, a feature story highlighting a personal achievement or milestone or an article regarding a controversial local issue within the Capital Region.  Any article that meets this criteria and was written by the applicant and published within the past year is also acceptable (submit a clipping).   (2 @ $500 each)

__  EMERICK FUNERAL HOME:  JOHN J. SANVIDGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: John J. Sanvidge dedicated his life to reaching out to others in the depths of grief, serving as a pillar of the community of Troy, and exhibiting his personal warmth and goodness to all. Reflecting a positive, outgoing personality and attitude, the recipient of this scholarship will have participated in community involvement activities to help others in need, such as the poor, the elderly, the lonely, or the grieving. The scholarship will be awarded to an applicant planning to enter a 2 or 4 year college program in the helping professions, such as mortuary science or social services. ($1,000)


__ ADAM HASWELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:  Established in memory of a member of the 2004 senior class at Shenendehowa High School.  The criteria specifies a graduating senior, preferably from Shenendehowa High School, who is an active participant in recreational or school sports and/or who works part-time, and who is planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college. An individual with the following personal qualities will be given special consideration for this award:  willingness to help others, understanding of people's differences, outgoing personality and ability to maintain a positive attitude through happiness and adversity. ($750)

__ SUSAN JILL HUGHES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP for ELEMENTARY EDUCATION: Named in memory of a former student and grade 2 teacher at Tesago Elementary School, the scholarship is for a Shenendehowa High School graduate who will be attending SUNY Geneseo (preference) or a NYS college, majoring in elementary education. The recipient should have demonstrated commitment, involvement and success in working with elementary-age children and should have a joyful, positive outlook on children and life. Requires 2 letters of reference. ($1,000)

__ EVA JAROSE SCHOLARSHIPS - These scholarships are presented to members of the Class of 2011 at Shenendehowa High School who demonstrate personal characteristics of conscientiousness, caring, honesty, integrity and hard work as demonstrated by letters of reference and the information on the scholarship application.  Input from Shenendehowa High School will be sought in an effort to distribute these scholarships to students who have not already been selected for another funded scholarship.  (3 at $500 each) 


__ KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SCHOLARSHIPS (2) and Roland Felano Memorial Scholarship: Three (3) $500 scholarships have been provided through the generosity of the K of C, Fr. Robert C. Scott Council 11064, Clifton Park, NY, for high school seniors (1) who are permanent residents of the Shenendehowa School District who attend any public, parochial or private high school;  and (2) who are Roman Catholic  - preferably parishioners of St. Edward's Church - and who can provide a letter of endorsement from a priest  and (3) who plan to matriculate at a Catholic institution of higher education. One of the three scholarships may be awarded to a student who has experienced educational, physical or emotional challenges. 

__ NEW YORK LONG TERM BROKERS LTD. SCHOLARSHIP - General criteria - for students planning on pursuing a degree in business.  Preference will be given to members of DECA or Future Business Leaders of America.  ($1,000)

__  NICOLE LEE MEMORIAL AWARD:  This award was named to honor the memory of Nicole Marie Lee, a graduate of Gowana Middle School and former Shenendehowa High School student. The criteria specifies the recipient, a graduate of both schools, will be chosen based on creativity and personal achievement through adversity.  ($1,000) 

__  PATRICK JAMES (PJ) O'DONNELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established by his family to perpetuate the memory of his courage, quest for knowledge, faith, and endearing personality.  PJ was a senior at Siena College majoring in accounting when he passed away in 1989 at the age of 21. He was a varsity wrestler and a member of the National Honor Society while at Shenendehowa High School, Class of 1985. ($500)

__ MATTHEW F. PROCTOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:  The scholarship is to be awarded to a Shenendehowa High School graduate who will be enrolling in a four-year program in New York State.  The scholarship was established in Matt's honor to acknowledge those students who share his love of learning and dedication to their education.  Matt faced incredible challenges with grace, dignity and unstoppable optimism, and it is hoped that his scholarship will inspire graduating seniors to appreciate their precious gift of "life" as he did.  An ideal candidate would be one who has had to deal with personal adversity but yet remained positive and optimistic.  ($500)

__ROBERT PATRICK (BOB) STEWART MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: To honor the memory of a 2010 Shenendehowa graduate. The scholarship is to be awarded to a Shenendehowa graduate enrolling in a two or four-year program, who has played a varsity sport (golf or bowling preference), displaying integrity and sportsmanship. The individual receiving this award should possess compassion and a commitment to helping others. Essay to discuss the importance of family, and the people in his/her life who have influenced him/her with the choice of a particiular career or path in life. ($1500)

___TWP CREATIVE EXCELLENCE AWARD:  The scholarship will be awarded to a Shenendehowa High School graduate enrolling in a creative trade school or two or four-year college program.  The recipient must provide an artistic portfolio of their chosen creative outlet (such as photography, video, painting/drawing, graphic design) and a written personal essay of their artistic goals.  By utilizing their creative skill, the recipient should demonstrate drive for success and carry him/herself in a professional manner.  A letter of recommenda- tion from their art/creative teacher is encouraged.  Although not required, special attention will be given to applicants who are involved in extracurricular activities.  ($500)

(Note that your guidance office may have an earlier deadline, which must be honored! All applications must be postmarked by March 19, 2012. Shenendehowa High School seniors must return the completed applications to the counseling center by  February 20, 2012.)
