What does New York State require of homeschoolers?

Below is a brief summary of the main requirements of homeschoolers in New York State.
  • A letter of intent needs to be filed with your local school district. This letter simply states that you are planning to homeschool your child(ren).
  • Within 30 days of your letter of intent, you need to fill out an Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP).
  • The IHIP includes the child's name, age and grade level; syllabi, curriculum materials, textbooks, or plan of instruction; dates to submit quarterly reports; name of instructor.
  • The required subjects and hourly attendance requirements vary by grade level and are listed in the New York State Homeschooling Regulations (see link below).
  • Four times a year you will need to file a quarterly report. The quarterly report is a summary of work completed.
  • Each year an annual assessment is required. The requirements vary by grade level, whether a narrative assessment or a standardized test is required. See link to NYS Regulations for more specific information.
The above is meant to be a brief summary only. The New York State Homeschooling Regulations provide more complete information and can be viewed at the link below or your school district can supply this to you. Help is available from Saratoga LEAH members if you are unsure of the meaning or how to comply with these regulations.
