Freight Deport/Elnora, ca. 1910
Railroad station and freight depot, Elnora, c. 1900. Elnora was an important freight deport on the D&H Railroad. Molasses arrived for Smith’s Grain and Feed Store, and molding sand was loaded on the train for shipment to foundries. Mr. C.D. Hammond, supervisor of the D&H Railroad, named the community Elnora – after his wife – in 1882. It was previously known as Hubbs Corners. An overpass replaced the railroad crossing in the 1920s. A portion of this station still remains.
