Shenendehowa Rotary
announced that Monica Laurel-Leigh Meierdiercks is Student of the Year.
Laurel-Leigh is a home-schooled student who for the past two years attended
Hudson Valley Community College part-time and earned 38 credits holding a 4.0
GPA. She was recently accepted as a sophomore transfer student at Florida
Southern College in Lakeland, Florida. Laurel, as her friends know her, joined
Interact as a charter member four years ago. She was the first president of
Southern Saratoga Interact and helped with every activity, project and
fundraiser. The club shopped for a “Chamber Angel”, adopted a segment of
Riverview Road as a semi-annual roadside cleanup project, and did a number of
bake sales to raise money for the “Clean Water” project in Central America.
“Laurel has been involved in Girl Scouts and achieved the highest honor, the
Gold Award,” noted Shenendehowa Rotary’s President Bruce VanDenburg. “Her
project was a massive literacy project: collecting new and used books to
replenish a local library in the hurricane devastated Gulf Coast area.”
This year she helped out area Rotary Clubs and Interact Clubs as Rotary District
7190 Interact Representative. “Interact is the youth program of Rotary,” adds
District Governor John Eaton of Scotia. “We have a dozen Interact Clubs in the
greater Capital District area each lead by high school youth involved in
changing and saving lives in their academic setting, in their community, and
though out the world.”
Shenendehowa Rotary is celebrating over fifty years as a service organization
changing and saving lives in our community, through our professions, and
throughout the world. Shenendehowa Rotary meets every Thursday morning at 7:15
AM for breakfast at Coburg Village near the intersection of Grooms and Vischer
Ferry Roads in Clifton Park.
