Legislation
has been signed by Governor Pataki designating the
Mohawk Towpath Byway as part of New York State’s Scenic Byways System. The
new designation highlights the historic Erie Canal route as it winds through the
communities of Waterford, Cohoes, Colonie, Halfmoon, Clifton Park, Niskayuna and
Schenectady. Scenic byways are roadways that recognize outstanding scenic,
natural, recreational, cultural, historic and archaeological points of interest.
They also provide a pleasing alternative to the high-speed, multi-lane, limited
access highway.
Members of the Executive Board of the
Mohawk Towpath Byway applauded the Governor’s action linking several Capital
District towns and cities. Eric Hamilton, chairman of the Executive Board,
thanked state legislators, Senator Farley and Assemblyman Canestrari for their
efforts in sponsoring this new addition to the Byways System. “Efforts to
stimulate a historic and scenic interest of the region have been recognized
because of the unrelenting work and partnerships of many. We can expect people
to visit their own backyards and point with pride to its varied landscape along
the Mohawk River and old Erie Canal towpath.”
The Byway designation will help bring federal and state funds into the area. The
result can revitalize segments of communities that have been neglected and will
stimulate economic development that compliments the scenic and recreational
potential of the route along the historic waterway. “We view this designation as
the beginning of many interesting opportunities that will highlight a roadway
that crosses back and forth through parts of Albany, Saratoga and Schenectady
counties,” stated Hamilton.
Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Coalition, Inc. was founded in 1999 and incorporated
in 2002. The coalition is guided by representatives from the member
municipalities. A corridor management plan was prepared for the Mohawk Towpath
Byway with the assistance of the Mohawk Valley Heritage Corridor Commission. The
Mohawk Towpath group has produced two local newsletters and maintains a website
showcasing events and activities. Efforts are underway to link this byway with
the Revolutionary Byway that will continue from Schenectady to Lake Ontario.
